According to the Diesel Technology Forum, Massachusetts, the Bay State's trucking industry handles 83% of the state’s freight exports and 69% of its imports.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), a part of the American Trucking Associations(ATA), published the following report on how the trucking industry relates to Massachusetts’ economy:


Trucking Drives the Economy

Employment:

In the year 2011, Massachusetts' trucking industry offered 116,930 jobs or one out of 24 in the state. Massachusetts' total paid trucking industry wages exceeded $5.8 billion, with an average yearly trucking industry salary of $49,351. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the United States reported in May 2011 that truck drivers, heavy tractor-trailer and light delivery drivers, held 41,590 jobs with a mean yearly salary of $40,945.

Small Business Emphasis:

In the year 2012, there were over 8,260 small and locally owned trucking companies located in Massachusetts that are served by a wide range of large and small supporting businesses.

Transportation of Essential Products:

Over 87% of Massachusetts populations depend solely on trucks to move their goods. Trucks transported 91% of the state's total manufactured tonnage in 2010 or 537,317 tons per day.


Trucking Pays the Freight

As an Industry:

In the year 2009, Massachusetts' trucking industry paid nearly $417 million in federal and state roadway taxes. The industry paid 28% of all taxes owed by Massachusetts motorists, despite the trucks serving only 6% of vehicle miles traveled.

Individual Companies:

In January 2013, a typical five-axle tractor-semitrailer combination paid $5,280 in state highway use taxes in addition to $8,906 in federal use taxes. These taxes were higher than the regular taxes paid by Massachusetts' businesses.

Roadway Use:

In 2008, Massachusetts owned 36,105 miles of public roads over which all motorists traveled 55 billion miles where the trucks traveled for 3 billion miles.

HVUT is the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax paid to the IRS annually for operating heavy vehicles weighing 55,000 pounds or more on public highways.
